mutilated cow found near Saskatoon
« on: Aug 21 2009 - 07:51PM »
A veterinarian is examining the remains of a mutilated cow after a local farmer discovered one of his animals brutally slain in a pasture north of Saskatoon.

The cow was found lying in a pool of blood. Its genitals and udder had been cut out, the flesh on its head had been stripped to the bone in a perfect circle and its tongue had been cut out. The cow may have been dead for up to 36 hours before it was discovered Wednesday.

"This was not an animal (that inflicted the wounds)," says Mary Bartsch. Her husband Neil discovered the cow. "They obviously stabbed her."

The Bartschs have rented the pasture land for nearly 20 years and have never seen this type of injury.

None of the other cows sustained any injuries.

Mary Bartsch said this is not the first time a cow has been mutilated in the area. She said her neighbour reported losing several cows to identical injuries.

"You hear about this from time to time," she said. "We're kind of in shock. We're not sure quite what to do now."

RCMP are investigating the incident.
