death curve, rural cambridge
« on: Oct 14 2009 - 12:23PM »
Was just curious if anyone has ever heard of Death Curve outside of Cambridge, IL? Death curve is where a woman decapitated her seven children in 1907. Story/Legend has it that her husband came down with a bad cold and ended up dying. Realizing that she could not care for her seven children by herself, she lined each one up in the front yard, and decapitated each one with an axe. After she had realized what she did she set her house on fire, and tried to burn the kids. Realizing that didn't work, she shot herself. At night, around 10:27 (that's when she killed herself), you can see her ghost sitting on the same fencepost that is still there today. Her kids are buried in a mass grave about a mile from the residence. The graveyard is out in the counry as well. And courthouse records do show a house and a barn that stood in the exact same spot over 100 years ago. This is a real place, and a real event that happened. Just the facts aren't really for sure. Some say she killed herself at 10:45, and some say she slit her throat. Some also say that after she decapitated the kids, she put them in the house and tied to burn it to get rid of them. When that didn't work, she then kill herself. Her name was Julia Markham. I myself have been out there numerous times, not at night though, but haven't seen anything. I walked all through the fields and around, but didn't see anything. It's a neat place worth investigating a little further I believe. Just thought I would mention it to see if anyone else has heard of this place before. Dave

That is definately a tragic tale that would possibly lead to a haunting.
This is the first time that I have heard of this. Thanks for posting.

Hi, Yes this is located 2 miles away from house, out in the country. Cambridge, IL. Definitley tragic back in 1907. The children ranged in age from 8 months, to 8 years old. It would definitley be a spot to research and investigate. Thanks for replying.

It looks like this happened on 9/30/1905, and she used the axe on herself...

Theres many different stories, to this story. When you google it, and click on the ones that come up, they all say something different. The only people that know are the Markham's themselves.
