Marie Laveau - The Voodoo Queen of New Orleans
« on: Dec 27 2009 - 06:13PM »
I've been doing some reading on her. With a career through two life spans (mother and daughter of the same name), Marie Laveau has been called the "Voodoo Queen" of New Orleans. Born a free Louisiana creole as the daughter of a wealthy white planter and his slave mistress, she ruled New Orleans in the nineteenth century with a following of both blacks and whites and even gained political influence with politicians through her supposed voodoo powers. Many a lost soul or desperate lover in New Orleans paid her a visit to request a favor. Legend has it that even almost 130 years after her death, if you visit her tomb and draw three red brick X's on her tomb, she will grant a wish. I don't believe in voodoo necessarily, but I think she is fascinating. What have other people heard about her?

:Y: That was very interesting, thank you MarkMc1990.  When I was in highschool, we used to go visit my brother who went to Tulane. Wish I knew about Marie Laveau back then...
