Wow, that guy was a hammy actor that I don't think I can buy this one.

Google tells me that Mary Miller Jason was listed in a book about witches in York Maine, buried in the 'Old Burying Yard'.  However, there is no Mary Miller Jason buried there, but there IS a Mary Nasson buried there, died in 1774, and her grave is known as the 'Witches Grave'.  It seems unclear whether she really did practice herbal medicines and such, or if it got that name simply because it is such an interesting marker.  There is a headstone, a flat slab that covers her body, and a 'footstone' at the other end.  Here are a few pictures.

Neat! I have never seen that before. Not in pictures or for real. What a neat grave site. I'll bet it won't be moved that easily. It seems that someone either loved her very much and wanted her to be remembered for a long time OR they wanted to make sure that she didn't get up outa there easily.  ;)  Oh and good research Rachael.

I've been reading more about it... the legend is that she was buried that way to 'keep her from wandering'.  History books (per the internet) say that it was because her husband move to a new city after her death, and the families were responsible for maintaining the graves.  He didn't want pigs rooting around in her grave so he covered it all up.

After looking around at other pictures of this place I really want to go there.  Beautiful markers, all old as can be, burials stopped in the 1850's.

Thanks Colleen!
